- American Troops march off to war On 7 December 1941, while German armies were freezing before Moscow, Japan suddenly pushed the United States into the struggle by attacking the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. About 100 ships of the US Navy were present that morning. At the time of the attack, the US was not at war with Japan and had recently been in close discussions with high-ranking Japanese officials. The attack made the entering of Japan into the war on with Germany and Italy, while the US entered the war on the Allied side. Four days later Hitler declared war on the United States. President Roosevelt called on Congress for immediate and massive expansion of the armed forces.
